A 15-foot icon of Christ the Teacher began greeting visitors to St. Nicholas Parish in Gig Harbor late October.
The icon, written by Giorgina Wells, is mounted on the church’s bell tower facing the street, visible to anyone passing by. Patrick Sharkey, director of operations at St. Nicholas, said this was the plan Father Mark Guzman had when he asked Wells to create the icon four months prior.
Wells, a member of St. Joseph Parish in Tacoma, has done 25 pieces for St. Nicholas Parish, where she used to be a parishioner. While no longer a parishioner there, Wells said her heart still lies with St. Nicholas.
